hurricanes: the misunderstood phenomenon

I’ve been living on the west coast of Florida for the past couple of months, just a few miles from the beach. In the span of two weeks, we’ve been hit with two severe hurricanes, one of them hitting landfall in my city as a category three.

Considering the horrors that are brought about by hurricanes, our attitude toward them seems reasonable. We name them, we demonize them, we’re morbidly terrified of them—fair. When it comes to hurricanes we are completely out of control. And if there’s one thing humans can’t stand to live without, it’s control.

— I’m not free of fear when it comes to hurricanes, nor will I ever be, but I am endlessly fascinated by them.

I mean, how can you not think they’re at least a little cool? Especially from an aerial view, they’re incredible to look at.

perspective

— As humans, we have a tendency to only see the bad, we fail to see the bigger picture.

— We must zoom out to understand.

the why

Understanding begins with knowing the why. For the longest time, I never truly knew why hurricanes occurred, and therefore, I saw them as, honestly, pure evil. Lack of understanding instills excess fear and prevents us from being able to create real change.

why do we get hurricanes?

— To simplify, hurricanes exist to cool down the earth.

— Hurricanes begin in waters that are too warm and use their power to pull deep, cooler waters up to the surface.

the earth is a body

— The Earth is its own body, its own ecosystem, its own organism in a way.

— Because of this, the Earth has methods built in to maintain homeostasis, just like the human body does.

— In summary, as our Earth warms up, hurricanes will grow in size and strength.

— The more we work together to help cool our planet, the healthier Earth will be, and we’ll experience less catastrophic hurricanes.
