how to strengthen your imagination

Imagination is the most powerful skill humans possess. It’s how we invented the airplane, the refrigerator, the cellphone; the list goes on. Without imagination, how can we dream of something better than what we have now? Imagination is how we grow, it’s how we evolve.

In my own life, because I’m obsessed with the power and beauty of imagination, I’ve been researching ways to strengthen my own. Here’s a list of my favorite methods on how to strengthen your imagination

creative writing

— Write! Create fictional worlds, draft up unique characters, use fun writing prompts; write beyond what you see in your own reality.

— Check out Writer’s Digest for creative writing prompts.

visualize daily

— Spend some time each day alone, in a quiet place, and practice visualization. Imagine your greatest dreams coming true, imagine your perfect dream life.

— Or, imagine fictional dream worlds, challenge yourself to think about things you don’t think could ever possibly exist, put yourself in that world.

read books

— Read, read, read. This is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen your imagination.

— Read fiction, poetry, fantasy; read memoirs from people who are living your dream life.

— Reading expands your worldview, which strengthens your imaginative skills.

practice mindfulness

— Practicing mindfulness and meditation reduces mental clutter, which therefore allows more space for imaginative thinking.

— Check out my post on easy ways to practice mindfulness.

create art

— Draw, paint, make little crafts. Do all of this without a definite end goal. Create just for the sake of creating and watch your imagination thrive.

have new experiences

— Travel near or far. Explore places near you, such as a new cafe or a nearby town.

— Even something as simple as trying out a new routine or hobby can expand the mind, which will help strengthen your imagination.
