I’ve been to New York City three times in the past year and I must say, my favorite part was the food every time. I eat mostly plant-based these days and coming from a city that doesn’t have a plethora of options, NYC is like a dream. Vegan food in New York City is unmatched.
Here are my favorite places to eat when I’m in the city.
Tompkins Square Bagels
This is the best place in NYC for vegan, gluten-free bagels. While the line is usually out the door, it moves fast, and you get to watch the behind-the-scenes action as they make the bagels from scratch!
They make their cream cheese in-house using tofu with ten different flavors — my favorites being sun-dried tomato, garlic herb, and plain with strawberry jam added. Also, if you’d like a little extra protein, you can choose to add a Beyond Meat patty.
The Organic Grill
This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of New York City. Everything is vegan and most of their items are gluten-free as well.
Their food is incredible. I wish they had locations all around the world. If you make it here for a meal, the mac n’ cheese bites are a must—I’d fly to NYC for the day just for these.
When I’m in the city by myself, I love to go here in the afternoons to have most of the place to myself for an early dinner. Also, the “tablecloths” are paper and they give you crayons to draw with—it’s so fun!
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
This is my favorite dairy-free ice cream I’ve ever tried. It’s creamy and flavorful without the wateriness that can sometimes be found in other brands. Go to one of the locations near Central Park, find a pretty tree to sit under, and enjoy!
If you can’t make it to New York City, they also sell their ice cream in stores! Check out their website to see if there’s any near you. My favorite flavors are the Vegan Peanut Butter Brownie Honeycomb and the Brownie Sundae Raspberry Swirl—both are to die for.
