how to curate a fall capsule wardrobe

With traveling so much, I keep my clothing to a minimum—everything I own must fit in my 20-inch suitcase. To help with this, I maintain a capsule wardrobe everywhere I go that matches the current season and city I’m in.

Thrifting helps so much with this! I can easily swap out clothes when the season changes or when I travel to new places by donating and buying new pieces.

I’ve been in Florida for a few months now, so I’ve only needed summer clothes, but in the next few weeks I’ll be in New York and North Carolina, so I’ll need some fall clothes. That being said, here’s how I plan on building my fall capsule wardrobe!

basic tees

— First, it helps to start with the basics. Things like a simple long sleeve and a scoop neck short sleeve, maybe a turtleneck if it’s really cold (although I prefer mock-necks, the less suffocating cousin).

— Like in the photo, it can be helpful to have basic tees to layer with outerwear like leather jackets.

pants

— I find that when traveling, I really only need two pairs of pants. One pair of black slacks (mine are linen) and a pair of classic medium blue jeans (not too dark or light so they go with everything). If I were to get a third pair of pants it’d be black jeans or a fun colorful pant.

skirts

— Plaid, corduroy, and dark denim mini skirts look so cute in the fall. I also love the look of maxi skirts with a slit on the side, especially paired with Converse.

— Also, since it’s chilly outside, don’t forget tights! I love going for black, sheer ones.

a dress

— While I love dresses in the summer, I prefer skirts in the fall. However, it’s always good to have at least one dress on hand—preferably the little black dress.

sweaters

— We all know sweaters are essential to fall. I love always having a black one that goes with everything, and one with a plaid or striped pattern on it.

shoes

— I’m a Converse girl all the way. But I also love the look of Doc’s and Mary Jane’s in the fall.

a jacket

— You can’t go wrong with a denim or leather jacket in the fall. Corduroy and canvas-style jackets can also look really nice. I love laying with jackets because they can help level-up an otherwise boring outfit.

accessories

— From jewelry, to bags, socks, hats, sunglasses, headbands, even to the way you style your hair, can help add personality and creativity to an outfit. I love jewelry especially because I can easily pack many different pieces in my bag.

Thank you for reading and I hope this helps you build your own fall capsule wardrobe!
